Frequently asked questions about Brightlayer Distributed IT Software

Get answers to common questions about Eaton's Brightlayer Distributed IT Software,  such as key benefits, what's included, and how it's installed and supported

What is Eaton’s Brightlayer Distributed IT software?

Eaton’s Brightlayer Distributed IT (Brightlayer DIT) software is a powerful tool that allows you to monitor power devices such as uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) and power distribution units (PDUs), as well as generators and larger PDUs with breaker panels, regardless of their location. This enables you to know what’s happening across your distributed infrastructure—from a few locations to thousands.

What kinds of customers can benefit from Brightlayer DIT software?

Customers with at least 10 UPSs across two or more buildings or locations can benefit significantly from using our software. Examples include retail establishments such as grocery stores, gas stations and fashion; K-12 and higher education; healthcare such as hospitals, labs and medical buildings; and edge data centers.

What are the key benefits of Brightlayer DIT software?

With our Brightlayer DIT software, you’ll know what’s happening with the UPSs and PDUs across your distributed infrastructure with meaningful real-time alerts prioritized by severity, no nuisance alarms—so you’re only alerted when there’s a critical issue and escalation when alarms aren’t acknowledged to ensure critical issues are addressed.

The software also allows you to quickly troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues. With our software, you can:

  • Remotely control rackmount PDU outlets and rackmount UPS load segments—regardless of the vendor.
  • Automate device response and/or shutdown during critical power events or environmental stress conditions, like high temperature.
  • Reduce truck rolls and the need for on-site, non-IT staff to help troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Have 24/7 insight into equipment performance, enabling you to remotely power cycle devices and remotely diagnose and take proactive corrective action when needed, like replacing a UPS battery that’s low.

And if you’re an Eaton hardware customer, you can remotely push firmware updates or configuration changes in bulk to your rackmount PDU and rackmount UPS network cards in minutes. This eliminates the need for updates to be made in-person and will help keep your organization safer from cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

What’s the difference between Eaton’s Brightlayer DCIM and Brightlayer DIT software?

Our Brightlayer DIT software is designed to monitor and manage power equipment (primarily UPSs and PDUs) in distributed environments, such as retail, education, healthcare and edge data centers, while our Brightlayer DCIM software provides tools for monitoring and managing the power, space, cooling and operational aspects of running a data center—specifically rack-mounted IT equipment such as servers, storage and compute.

What options are available with Brightlayer DIT software?

We offer two versions of Brightlayer DIT software: Essential and Advanced. A side-by-side comparison of the features is available in our product comparison guide

Extensions are also available to add even more capabilities to the software. This includes a business intelligence dashboard, white label branding, non-core device monitoring and third-party integrations, such as Service Now and RF Code Centerscape.

What's the difference between Brightlayer DIT Lite and Brightlayer DIT software?

Brightlayer DIT Lite is designed for smaller IT environments, typically those with 50 devices or fewer. It provides essential tools to help monitor and manage assets across multiple sites. These include bulk device management, real-time asset monitoring, alarm and notification systems, customizable reporting tools, IT automation features, and built-in cybersecurity protections.

While Brightlayer DIT Software, on the other hand, is the full-featured version intended for larger, enterprise-scale deployments. In addition to all the capabilities offered in DIT Lite, it includes advanced features such as visual rack building, location and floorplan design tools, smart alarm configurations, power infrastructure cabling support, interactive navigation maps, predictive analytics through trend charts, and capacity planning tools.

This tiered offering allows customers to choose the solution that best fits their operational scale and complexity.

Is there a device limit for Brightlayer DIT Lite and Brightlayer DIT software?

Brightlayer DIT Lite is designed for smaller IT environments and supports up to 50 devices. It offers essential monitoring and management capabilities, making it an ideal solution for businesses with limited infrastructure.

While Brightlayer DIT Software, on the other hand, is built for enterprise-scale deployments and does not have a fixed device limit. It is fully scalable and includes advanced features to support complex and large-scale IT operations.

How are devices counted with Brightlayer DIT software?

Brightlayer DIT Lite is tailored for smaller IT environments and supports up to 50 devices. It includes essential features such as bulk device management, asset monitoring, alarm notifications, customizable reporting, IT automation, and cybersecurity tools—making it an ideal solution for businesses with limited infrastructure.

And Brightlayer DIT Software is designed for enterprise-scale deployments and does not have a fixed device limit. Instead, it uses a flexible licensing model based on device types:

  • Core devices—which include power, cooling, and rack infrastructure—require one license per device.
  • Non-core devices, such as door locks or video cameras, can be added at no cost for basic asset management and visualization. However, if monitoring is needed, a separate license called the Brightlayer Extension Monitored Device must be purchased for each non-core device.
  • For IT automation capabilities, customers must purchase the Brightlayer Extension IT Automation Host Device license for each host server. This extension supports unlimited virtual machines and automations per host.

Which manufacturers are supported by Brightlayer DIT software?

Our model library includes more than 30,000 models of devices from hundreds of manufactures across hundreds of device types. If a device is not currently included in our model library but utilizes a common communication protocol such as SNMP, MODBUS or BACnet, we will create a model for that device (requires annual support).

How is Brightlayer DIT software installed?

The easiest and most common method for installing our software is direct deployment to a server in your virtual environment via our Open Virtualization Format (OVF). The software can also be installed on a traditional server or via a cloud implementation.

What are the minimum system requirements for installing Brightlayer DIT software?
